The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved a Rs 62,000 crore deal for 156 Light Combat Helicopters from HAL for the Indian Army and Air Force. This deal signifies the largest order for HAL and strengthens defense capabilities along India’s borders while promoting indigenous manufacturing and job creation.

The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved a substantial deal worth over Rs 62,000 crore for the procurement of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the Indian Army and Air Force. This marks HAL’s largest order to date, with helicopters to be manufactured in Bengaluru and Tumkur, Karnataka.

Of the 156 helicopters, 90 are designated for the Indian Army, with the remaining allocated to the Indian Air Force (IAF). This acquisition aims to bolster operational capabilities along the borders with China and Pakistan and is expected to significantly contribute to job creation and the enhancement of the aerospace sector in India.

The LCH, also referred to as the Prachand, is remarkable for its operational capabilities, being the only attack helicopter able to take off and land at altitudes up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet). This feature renders it particularly suitable for deployment in challenging terrains such as the Siachen glacier and eastern Ladakh.

The Prachand helicopter is equipped to fire various air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, effectively neutralizing enemy air defense systems. The government prioritizes self-reliance in defense manufacturing, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ initiative under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Additionally, the government has placed significant orders for indigenous defense systems, including 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), with negotiations for an additional 97 units underway. The Cabinet Committee has also approved a Rs 7,000 crore deal for 307 ATAGS howitzers, with contracts expected to be finalized by Wednesday.
