Beijing Rejects Proposal for Overseas Dalai Lama Reincarnation
Beijing will not recognize the Dalai Lama’s foreign reincarnation proposal, deeming it illegal. Li Decheng from the China Tibetology Research Centre stated that a foreign successor contradicts existing religious customs and China’s control over Tibetan Buddhism. The discussion arose after the Dalai Lama suggested his reincarnation might occur outside China.
Recent statements from Beijing indicate that the Chinese government will not recognize the Dalai Lama’s proposal for an overseas reincarnation. According to Li Decheng, deputy director of the China Tibetology Research Centre, any declaration of the next Dalai Lama being reborn abroad would be deemed illegal under Chinese law. He affirmed that such a foreign successor contradicts religious customs and China’s methods of managing reincarnations in Tibetan Buddhism.
During a forum held in Beijing, Li emphasized that the concept of a foreign successor does not align with the established rituals and customs of Tibetan Buddhism. His remarks came after the Dalai Lama suggested in a newly published book that he may be reincarnated as a child outside of China, which could provoke discontent from the Chinese authorities. The forum was organized by the All-China Journalists Association and attended by reporters and diplomats to clarify the reincarnation system of Tibetan Buddhism’s living Buddhas.
The Chinese government’s stance on the Dalai Lama’s potential reincarnation emphasizes a strict adherence to domestic regulations governing Tibetan Buddhism. As such, any claim regarding the exiled spiritual leader’s successor being born abroad will be unequivocally rejected by Beijing, underlining the ongoing tensions between Tibetan interests and Chinese authority over religious practices.
