Russia’s Diplomatic Vision: Insights from Dmitry Polyanskiy on Global Crises
In an interview with Arab News, Russian diplomat Dmitry Polyanskiy criticized the Biden administration for escalating the Ukraine conflict while praising Trump’s pragmatic approach. He highlighted Saudi Arabia’s emerging role in international diplomacy and emphasized Russia’s support for Palestinian rights, the Sudanese government, and a peaceful transition in Syria, stressing the importance of humanitarian concerns over political leverage.
In a recent appearance on the Arab News program “Frankly Speaking,” Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s first deputy permanent representative to the UN, criticized the Biden administration’s role in escalating the Ukraine conflict, describing it as complicit rather than a facilitator of peace. He stated that the previous US administration created conditions conducive to conflict, culminating in Russia’s military actions in 2022. Conversely, he commended Donald Trump’s administration for adopting a more pragmatic approach regarding the situation in Ukraine.
Polyanskiy noted that recent diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia, involving both US and Russian officials, aimed to discuss a potential ceasefire and sanctions alleviation. He highlighted Saudi Arabia’s emerging influential role in global diplomacy, stating, “The world is changing and new centers of diplomatic activity are emerging.” He expressed appreciation for the proactive engagement of Saudi Arabia in facilitating discussions between Russia, the US, and Ukraine.
Expanding on these discussions, Polyanskiy acknowledged that the US-Russia talks also addressed broader regional issues, including the crisis in Gaza. He reiterated Russia’s support for Palestinian rights and underscored the necessity of unified Arab action to achieve a just resolution. Polyanskiy reaffirmed Russia’s position on the two-state solution as fundamental to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He voiced concerns regarding past efforts to normalize relations between Arab states and Israel, which he perceives to have marginalized Palestinian rights. Speaking on the crisis in Sudan, Polyanskiy affirmed Russia’s backing of the Sudanese government against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, emphasizing Russia’s support for a peaceful resolution in the region.
Additionally, Polyanskiy addressed humanitarian conditions in Sudan, countering claims of famine and asserting that distribution, rather than availability, poses the primary challenge. He cautioned against using humanitarian issues as political leverage. Regarding Syria, Polyanskiy discussed Russia’s support for a peaceful transition in governance and its long-term commitment to fostering strong ties with the Syrian people, while steering clear of speculative questions about Assad’s future.
Dmitry Polyanskiy’s comments during the interview underscore Russia’s standpoint on various international issues, particularly regarding the Ukraine conflict, Palestinian rights, Sudan, and Syria. He asserted the importance of Saudi Arabia’s role in fostering diplomatic dialogue and emphasized the necessity of addressing humanitarian crises without politicization. Through these discussions, Polyanskiy reflects a commitment to resolving conflicts through inclusive dialogue and international cooperation.
