Strengthening Bangladesh-China Relations Through Yunus’ Recent Visit

The recent visit of Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus to China has been officially recognized as a pivotal moment in enhancing Bangladesh-China relations. The interim government of Bangladesh announced that Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus’ recent visit to China, which was notably honored by President Xi Jinping, is expected to enhance bilateral relations with a focus on mutual benefits through cooperation on key issues. High Representative to the Chief Adviser, Khalilur Rahman, and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman, Chowdhury Ashik, briefed the media on the visit’s outcomes at the Foreign Service Academy, accompanied by the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.

Khalilur Rahman expressed feelings of inspiration regarding the significant honor bestowed upon Dr. Yunus and his delegation by the Chinese officials. During this visit, Bangladesh welcomed the involvement of Chinese companies in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), noting a positive disposition from the Chinese side.

The government of Bangladesh acknowledged China’s constructive role in facilitating peace talks concerning Myanmar and addressing the issues faced by forcibly displaced individuals from Rakhine State. China commended Bangladesh for its humanitarian efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to assist in finding a mutually agreeable solution through amicable discussions.

In terms of investment opportunities, Chowdhury Ashik highlighted the emphasis on a bilateral relationship that fosters mutual benefits, revealing that over 100 companies were met during the visit. He shared insights on why Bangladesh is a favorable destination for investment, emphasizing recent improvements in the business environment.

Significant agreements were signed during the visit, including an “Economic and Technical Cooperation” agreement and various cooperation documents encompassing cultural exchanges, media partnerships, and developments in health and sports sectors. Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus expressed his gratitude to President Xi and invited Chinese leaders to visit Bangladesh.

Both sides recognized the importance of the 50-year diplomatic relationship and committed to maintaining a stable and healthy partnership, underscoring adherence to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence while deepening mutual political trust and cooperation. They also reaffirmed their commitment to support each other’s vital interests and territorial integrity.

The joint statement highlighted China’s supportive stance toward Bangladesh’s independence and governance while promoting development suited to the nation’s conditions. Dr. Yunus attended the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference in Hainan and subsequently visited Beijing, where he met with President Xi on March 28.
