Yemen’s Houthi Rebels Claim Assaults on USS Harry S. Truman
On March 30, Yemen’s Houthi rebels asserted they attacked the USS Harry S. Truman thrice in 24 hours. This follows President Trump’s military operation announcement against the Houthis in response to their aggression at sea. Concurrently, Trump warned Iran of dire consequences should it fail to negotiate a nuclear agreement, while Iran’s leadership rejected direct talks with the US.
On March 30, spokesman for the Houthi armed forces, Yahya Saree, claimed that the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier was attacked three times within the previous 24 hours by members of Yemen’s Houthi movement, according to the Russian news agency TASS. Saree stated, “In the last 24 hours, our armed forces engaged in a battle with a group of enemy warships led by the US aircraft carrier Harry Truman three times in the Red Sea.” This assault involved missile troops, unmanned aerial vehicles, and naval forces deploying several cruise missiles and drones.
In response to Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, United States President Donald Trump announced a military operation against the rebel group on March 15. Currently, the Houthis control roughly one-third of Yemeni territory.
President Trump further issued a warning to Iran regarding severe repercussions should it fail to secure a nuclear agreement with the United States. In a phone interview with NBC News, he stated, “If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing.” Additionally, Trump mentioned possible “secondary tariffs” on Iran while confirming that both nations are maintaining discussions, albeit without notable advancements since the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord in 2018.
These developments coincided with remarks from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who addressed a letter sent by Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader, asserting that Iran would not participate in direct talks with the United States. “We don’t avoid talks; it’s the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far,” Pezeshkian indicated in a televised address, emphasizing the need for the US to establish credibility before negotiations can occur.
In summary, the situation involving Yemen’s Houthi rebels escalated with claims of multiple attacks on a US aircraft carrier. The US government, responding to previous escalations, has initiated military operations against the Houthis and continued to pressure Iran regarding its nuclear program. Iran, however, remains steadfast in its refusal to engage in direct negotiations with the US, highlighting the complexities of the diplomatic landscape in the region.
