Concerns regarding irregularities and a connection to China have emerged following the investigation into the recent collapse of a building in Thailand. According to the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand, there were no other skyscrapers in the vicinity that experienced similar damages. As of Monday, rescuers were endeavoring to locate 76 individuals believed to be trapped beneath the debris of the unfinished structure, which was designated for Thailand’s State Audit Office.

The Thai government has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the tower’s collapse, constructed by a joint venture involving a Chinese company and a well-established Thai construction firm. The building project commenced in 2020 and was a collaborative effort between Italian Thai Development PCL and China Railway Number 10 (Thailand) Ltd., a subsidiary of China’s state-owned China Railway Group.

Originally set for completion in 2026, the project was significantly behind schedule, with Deputy Auditor General Sutthipong Boonnithi reporting that construction was only “30% completed” prior to the collapse. Mana from the Anti-Corruption Organization noted frequent site visits and raised concerns about potential worker shortages and the possibility of shortcuts being taken.

Illuminating the issues, Mana remarked, “Sometimes the number of workers on site were much fewer than there should be, causing delays.” He expressed concern that the rush to finalize the project could compromise work standards, especially as the audit office had threatened to cancel contracts with the construction firms due to severe delays in January. Currently, the investigation will encompass the construction plans, materials employed, and any unsafe actions taken during construction.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered relevant agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the root causes of the collapse within one week. Minister Akanat Promphan expressed apprehension regarding the potential use of sub-standard steel in the construction process.

Additionally, Anek Siripanichgorn, a board member of the Council of Engineers Thailand, remarked, “It is strange that no other buildings suffered like this,” highlighting the lack of similar incidents among other construction projects in the region.

The investigation into the building collapse in Thailand, linked to a Chinese company, highlights serious concerns regarding construction practices and safety standards. With ongoing searches for trapped individuals and an official inquiry ordered by the Thai government, the focus will be on the investigation findings to prevent further tragedies in the future.
