Zimbabwean Students Showcase Proficiency at Chinese Character Contest
The second edition of the Chinese Character Hero Contest in Harare highlighted Zimbabwean students’ language skills. On March 31, the second edition of the Chinese Character Hero Contest took place in Harare, Zimbabwe, where local Chinese language learners demonstrated their proficiency. Organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Zimbabwe, the contest featured participants from primary schools, high schools, and colleges, all aiming to promote enthusiasm for learning the Chinese language.
Discent Jingo, a University of Zimbabwe student who secured victory in the college segment, expressed that preparing for the competition was both challenging and rewarding. He noted that understanding the evolution of Chinese characters demands significant focus, stating, “The preparation was not easy…but I am happy that my efforts have paid off.” Jingo emphasized that studying Chinese opens various opportunities, particularly with the increasing cooperation between Zimbabwe and China.
Rutendo Ndoma, who won the high school segment for the second consecutive year, shared her joy in receiving the award. The 17-year-old highlighted the rewarding nature of learning Chinese, explaining, “I have not given up because I find learning Chinese really interesting and fun.” She expressed that engaging with the language provides daily motivation.
During the event, Fainos Mangena, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Zimbabwe, delivered a welcome address underscoring the significance of language acquisition in today’s globalized context. He stressed the necessity for Zimbabweans to cultivate communication skills that facilitate interaction with all nations, particularly in light of the growing business ties with China.
The Chinese Character Hero Contest showcased the talents of Zimbabwean students in learning Chinese, reflecting the increasing interest in the language due to the expanding Zimbabwe-China relations.
