During a recent visit to China, Yunus characterized the northeastern states of India as a “landlocked area” and suggested that there are opportunities for China to penetrate the market in the region. AJP leaders cautioned Yunus, recalling the critical role played by India in Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 and highlighting the recent political turmoil Bangladesh has endured, which led to the exile of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and brought instability to the country.

The leaders noted that historically, Bangladeshi heads of state have made India their first foreign visit, recognizing the latter’s importance to Bangladeshi democracy. However, they expressed disappointment that Yunus chose to visit China and make remarks viewed as provocative against India’s interests in the region. They stated, “If Muhammad Yunus, sitting under Pakistan’s shadow, thinks he can challenge India, then he is living in a fool’s paradise.”

Furthermore, the AJP leaders warned, “If India’s 1.4 billion people turn their anger toward Bangladesh, it will be reduced to ashes. India considers Bangladesh as a younger sibling, not as an equal. Yunus should remember this before making reckless statements.”
