Chinese Teams Mobilize for Earthquake Rescue Operations in Myanmar
Chinese rescue teams have rescued six survivors in earthquake-struck Myanmar, as humanitarian aid arrives following a devastating earthquake. The magnitude 7.9 quake has resulted in over 2,000 deaths and ongoing rescue efforts include various teams from China, with significant financial and material support pledged by the Chinese government.
Multiple rescue teams from China have successfully rescued six individuals, including a pregnant woman, in earthquake-affected Myanmar. This rescue operation coincides with the arrival of China’s first humanitarian aid shipment in the region, following a magnitude 7.9 earthquake on Friday that claimed over 2,000 lives and left many injured and missing. The situation remains dire as rescue efforts continue across impacted areas.
The earthquake has resulted in reported casualties including three Chinese citizens; the Chinese embassy confirmed that 14 others sustained injuries. In response to the crisis, the China Search and Rescue Team (CSRT) quickly dispatched units to conduct assessments and initiate search-and-rescue operations in Mandalay, one of the hardest-hit cities.
Notably, early on Monday, the CSRT succeeded in rescuing a woman near a hotel, while efforts by the Zhejiang Rescue Team led to the safe extraction of three additional women trapped in an apartment building. Medically assisted transport was provided to all rescued individuals. Additional rescues included an elderly man extracted by rescuers from Yunnan province after being trapped for 40 hours.
Rescue operations are supported by a collective of 91 members from five social emergency response teams organized by China’s Ministry of Emergency Management. A campsite was established to facilitate these operations near the Chinese consulate in Mandalay.
To enhance relief efforts, a Hong Kong rescue team has also arrived in Mandalay, coordinating immediate actions with the CSRT. Equipped with professional gear and search dogs, the team is involved in ongoing search operations across two affected areas. Furthermore, the first shipment of relief supplies, including tents and first aid kits, was delivered by the Chinese government to support recovery efforts.
The Chinese government announced a response fund of 100 million yuan (approximately $14 million) for humanitarian assistance. According to spokesperson Guo Jiakun, China activated its emergency mechanism promptly, with the Yunnan rescue medical team entering Myanmar only 18 hours post-earthquake, marking the beginning of international rescue efforts in the region.
As ongoing coordinated rescue activities take place, approximately 400 Chinese earthquake experts and medical personnel are engaged in supporting relief efforts. Guo has expressed optimism that through collaboration with Myanmar and international support, recovery and reconstruction efforts can commence effectively.
