On Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new visa restrictions targeting Chinese officials who impede access to Tibetan regions for US diplomats and international observers. This action arises from the Chinese Communist Party’s ongoing refusal to grant the same access to US personnel while allowing its officials free entry to the United States.

Mr. Rubio stated that these measures align with the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act of 2018, emphasizing, “I am imposing additional visa restrictions on Chinese officials determined to be substantially involved in policies concerning access for foreigners to Tibetan Areas.” He highlighted that the CCP has long denied US diplomats and journalists access to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) and other Tibetan territories while enjoying openness in the United States.

Moreover, Mr. Rubio urged the CCP to remedy this situation promptly, demanding immediate unrestricted access for diplomats and other observers to the TAR, asserting that “This lack of reciprocity is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Additionally, earlier that day, a US Department of State spokesperson criticized China’s initiative for citizens to report on individuals promoting Taiwan independence, labeling it as ‘irresponsible and reprehensible.’ This request is perceived as part of Beijing’s intimidation efforts against Taiwan, undermining free speech and destabilizing the Indo-Pacific region.

In summation, the United States has implemented strict visa restrictions against Chinese officials due to their obstruction of access to Tibetan areas for US officials.
