China has expressed intent to import more goods from India amidst looming US tariffs. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong encouraged Indian businesses to explore trade opportunities in China while advocating for a transparent business climate. This initiative coincides with China and India’s efforts to rebuild relations following tensions since 2020. Additionally, India is seeking to negotiate lower tariffs with the US to improve trade dynamics.

In light of imminent US tariffs, China has expressed its readiness to enhance trade cooperation with India, indicating a willingness to import more Indian products. Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, encouraged Indian businesses to capitalize on trade opportunities in China, emphasizing the importance of mutual benefits in their economic relationship. “We are willing to work with the Indian side to strengthen practical cooperation in trade…” he stated in an interview with the Global Times.

Xu further highlighted China’s desire for India to foster a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese companies, thereby facilitating expanded cooperation between the two nations. This dialogue follows a recent communication from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Indian President Droupadi Murmu advocating for closer collaboration to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China.

The backdrop of this discussion includes ongoing efforts to mend ties strained by a border clash in 2020, which led to India imposing restrictions on Chinese investments. Despite these tensions, both nations agreed earlier this year to resume direct flights in a positive step toward normalizing relations.

The looming “Liberation Day” tariffs announced by President Trump are anticipated to disrupt global trade dynamics, encouraging India to negotiate lower tariffs to appease the United States, which has criticized India’s tariff policies. In response, India is actively pursuing dialogue with the US to finalize an early trade agreement aimed at resolving tariff issues.
