Egypt and China Collaborate on Waste Management Investment Initiatives

On April 1, 2025, Egyptian officials met with a Chinese delegation from Sinoma to discuss investment in alternative fuels and Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) for cement factories. The meeting underscored Egypt’s commitment to advancing its waste management system and adopting international standards, while the delegation was briefed on local waste management infrastructure.

On April 1, 2025, Yasser Abdullah, the CEO of the Waste Management Regulatory Authority at Egypt’s Ministry of Environment, engaged in discussions with a delegation from the Chinese firm Sinoma, led by Deputy Chairman Zhao Danhui. The focus of the talks was on potential investments in alternative fuel, specifically the production of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), which could be integrated into cement factory energy systems.

Additionally, the two parties explored strategies for safe waste disposal and emphasized the importance of applying high environmental standards to improve Egypt’s solid waste management framework, as reported by the Mena News Agency.

Environment Minister Yassmin Fouad highlighted that this meeting exemplifies the state’s dedication to adopting best international practices for an integrated waste management system and fostering investment throughout its various phases.

The Chinese delegation was also informed about the current status of Egypt’s waste management infrastructure, following visits to several critical waste management sites. Sinoma, one of China’s largest waste treatment companies, has been active in Egypt for over ten years and currently recycles a substantial portion of the country’s cement production, amounting to 50%.

In conclusion, the discussions between Egyptian officials and Sinoma represent a significant step towards enhancing Egypt’s waste management capabilities. The collaboration aims to integrate alternative fuels into cement manufacturing while ensuring safe waste disposal practices. Such initiatives are indicative of Egypt’s commitment to improving its solid waste management system through international cooperation and investment.
