U.S. Sanctions Russia-Based Network Aiding Yemen’s Houthi Armed Group
The U.S. has sanctioned a Russia-based network for facilitating weapons procurement for Yemen’s Houthis. The sanctions target Afghan businessmen assisting in acquiring military supplies, including stolen Ukrainian grain, to support Houthi operations. This initiative affirms the U.S. commitment to curbing the Houthis’ regional threats.
The United States has implemented sanctions against individuals and entities based in Russia for their involvement in facilitating the procurement of weapons and other commodities for Yemen’s Iran-affiliated Houthis. This action was announced by the Treasury Department on Wednesday.
The sanctions specifically target Hushang Ghairat and Sohrab Ghairat, Afghan businessmen operating in Russia, who assisted senior Houthi official Sa’id Al-Jamal in acquiring millions of dollars’ worth of goods from Russia for transportation to Houthi-controlled territories.
The range of goods procured included weaponry, sensitive materials, and stolen Ukrainian grain, as detailed in the Treasury’s statement. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted that the Houthis depend on Al-Jamal’s network for essential supplies that bolster their military operations. He emphasized that the sanctions reflect ongoing efforts to diminish the Houthis’ capacity to pose a regional threat through their disruptive actions.
The recent U.S. sanctions on a Russia-based network underscore the ongoing commitment to countering the influence of the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen. By targeting key figures and their procurement activities, the United States aims to limit the Houthis’ access to critical resources, thereby mitigating their operational effectiveness in the region.
