China has vowed to adopt countermeasures against the 34% tariffs imposed by the US on its imports, while leaving room for potential negotiations. On Thursday, China responded firmly to President Donald Trump’s imposition of 34 percent tariffs on $438 billion in imports from China, announcing that it would pursue countermeasures but leaving open the possibility for negotiations. The Chinese Commerce Ministry criticized Trump’s tariffs on its exports, which rank third following ASEAN and the EU, yet refrained from committing to immediate retaliatory actions.
Regarding potential future trade discussions with the United States, the Commerce Ministry indicated ongoing communication about trade concerns, expressing intentions to address these issues through constructive dialogue. Additionally, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun condemned the tariffs as a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, reinforcing China’s rejection of these measures aimed at economic bullying.
Guo Jiakun emphasized the futility of trade wars, stating, “Protectionism leads nowhere. We urge the US to stop doing the wrong thing and resolve trade differences with China and other countries through consultation with equality, respect, and mutual benefit.” China’s Commerce Ministry reiterated that the tariffs were based on subjective evaluations and harmed international trade standards, requesting the immediate cancellation of unilateral tariff actions.
Following these tariffs, the cumulative levies on Chinese goods reached 54 percent, approaching the 60 percent threshold previously mentioned by Trump. Earlier, Trump had implemented two rounds of 10 percent tariffs on Chinese products in February and March. He indicated openness to reducing tariffs if conditions regarding TikTok were met.
China retaliated previously with additional 15 percent tariffs on American goods and initiated legal proceedings at the WTO. Furthermore, Chinese authorities placed ten US companies on a list of unreliable entities, impacting those connected to defense, security, and sectors with dual-use capabilities.
Despite claims that tariffs would adversely affect US consumers, they are anticipated to significantly reduce American imports from China, thereby impacting domestic industries already experiencing economic challenges. China is the third-largest export destination for the US, with total trade in 2024 assessed at approximately $582.4 billion.
Trump justified the tariffs, stating they serve as a necessary corrective measure against perceived unfair trade practices, categorizing his policies toward China as “tough love.” He affirmed a deep respect for President Xi Jinping and acknowledged the perceived advantages China had over the US in trade practices.
