A Chinese-invested mango processing factory in Kampong Speu, Cambodia, has significantly improved the livelihoods of local workers and farmers. Phann Leakhena, employed as a mango slicer, reported that her life has transformed since she started working at Zhong Bao (Cambodia) Food Science & Technology Co., Ltd. four years ago. Previously struggling to support her family through sporadic work in mango orchards, she now earns between $300 and $500 monthly, allowing her to save around $200 each month after expenses.

The factory not only provides stable employment for Leakhena but also impacts the local economy positively by boosting job opportunities and supporting small-scale farmers. It’s good that Chinese people help buy mangoes from Cambodia because it has helped create jobs for locals, so they needn’t migrate for jobs far away from home, she noted. The factory employs over 800 workers and purchases thousands of tons of mangoes from local farmers each year.

Neang Sreymao, a team leader at the factory, emphasized the positive changes in rural livelihoods. With a monthly salary ranging from $500 to $800, she acknowledged the factory’s role in reviving mango farms in the region, which had been abandoned due to a lack of market for their produce. Since China has purchased mangoes from Cambodia, farmers have planted mango trees again and reaped the fruits, she stated, highlighting the renewed economic activity in the area.

Moreover, Tith Sreymean, a quality controller at the factory, praised the high quality and hygiene of the mangoes exported to China. She expressed gratitude towards Chinese companies for their support, which has enabled consistent incomes for rural workers. People living near the factory are very happy after Chinese investors have established it here because it has enabled them to make a stable income, she added. The positive changes represent a significant step towards economic stability for both workers and farmers in Cambodia.
