Lavrov stated, “Defense cooperation is developing intensively: our servicemen are actively cooperating with Mali’s military and personnel training is being carried out.” This meeting underscores Russia’s increasing engagement in Africa, particularly with nations governed by military juntas following recent coups.

The Sahel countries have distanced themselves from France, their historical colonizer, and turned towards Russia for military assistance, particularly in combating jihadist movements.
