Enhancing Macao’s Role: Business Opportunities with Portuguese-Speaking Countries
The Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) hosted a seminar to promote business opportunities between Chinese enterprises and Portuguese-speaking countries, focusing on Equatorial Guinea. The event attracted nearly 100 participants and highlighted the country’s abundant natural resources and investment prospects. It served as a precursor to a forthcoming “Entrepreneurs Meeting” scheduled for July, reflecting the ongoing economic cooperation between China and PSCs.
To further bolster Macao’s role as a platform for business opportunities between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs), the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) launched the “Portuguese-Speaking Countries Business Opportunities Series”. This initiative invites representatives from PSCs to present their business environments, investment opportunities, advantageous industries, and signature products to enterprises interested in these markets.
The inaugural seminar, titled “Portuguese-Speaking Countries Business Opportunities Promotion Seminar – Equatorial Guinea,” took place on March 28 at the Complex of Commerce and Trade Co-operation Platform for China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. The event garnered nearly 100 participants from diverse sectors including technology, finance, cultural industries, retail, construction, and professional services, alongside representatives from commerce and trade associations in mainland China, Macao, and Portuguese-speaking countries.
At the seminar, Ms. Cristina Abeso, representing Equatorial Guinea, emphasized the country’s rich natural resources, such as oil, natural gas, gold, and diamonds, and welcomed global enterprises to explore these opportunities. Two Chinese-funded enterprise representatives also shared their successful experiences in Equatorial Guinea, encouraging attendees to consider potential investments. The interactive question-and-answer session facilitated discussions that inspired participants to explore collaborative development prospects.
Post-seminar, participants visited the “Pavilion of China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform” and the product store “ENCONTRO”. An enterprise representative noted that the event, alongside the site visit, provided essential insights into Equatorial Guinea’s developmental potential. This exposure allowed attendees to better understand the opportunities available in various industry sectors and underscored Macao’s advantage as a gateway for engagement with PSCs.
This seminar serves as a precursor to the upcoming “Entrepreneurs Meeting” scheduled for July in Equatorial Guinea. The event symbolizes the beginning of the “Portuguese-Speaking Countries Business Opportunities Series” for 2025 organized by IPIM. In 2024, trade between China and PSCs reached a substantial value of $225.179 billion, showcasing the continually expanding cooperation between these entities. IPIM is dedicated to leveraging Macao’s strategic role to foster the entry of Chinese enterprises into the PSC markets and to promote stronger bilateral collaboration.
The “Portuguese-Speaking Countries Business Opportunities Promotion Seminar – Equatorial Guinea” marks a significant step in enhancing Macao’s role as a facilitator for business between China and PSCs. The event provided valuable insights into investment opportunities within Equatorial Guinea and fostered networking among participants. Looking ahead, this seminar paves the way for the forthcoming “Entrepreneurs Meeting,” indicating a robust trajectory for economic collaboration between Chinese enterprises and PSCs.
