On Sunday, Bangladesh announced it has granted a license to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service amidst concerns regarding rising US tariffs impacting its garment industry. This service will be officially introduced at an investment summit supported by the government, commencing in Dhaka on Monday. Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud, the chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, confirmed the approval was issued on March 28, prior to the announcement of new tariffs by former US President Donald Trump, which increased duties on Bangladesh goods significantly.

Elon Musk’s association with the White House has raised concerns due to his prominent role as an advisor to Trump, leading to questions about the intersection of his business ventures and government activities. Following a student-led revolution that ousted the previous government in August 2024, the current interim authorities in Dhaka are seeking support from the United States to bolster their diplomatic relations.
