Bangladesh Signs Artemis Accords, Enhancing International Space Cooperation

On April 8, 2025, Bangladesh became the 54th nation to endorse the Artemis Accords during a ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka, coinciding with the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025. The Artemis Accords, initiated by NASA in 2020, advocate for peaceful and collaborative exploration of outer space, specifically regarding the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. This agreement emphasizes principles such as transparency, interoperability, and mutual support among participating nations, with notable signatories including the United States, the United Kingdom, and India.
The signing commenced with a virtual address by Janet Petro, the Acting Administrator of NASA, who highlighted the significance of NASA’s Chief Astronaut Joseph M. Acaba’s visit to Bangladesh the previous December, which sparked the introduction of the Accords. Janet Petro expressed confidence in the potential of Bangladeshi innovators, stating, “The young minds of Bangladesh have shown the world their passion for space exploration.” She commended the creativity demonstrated by these innovators in NASA’s space apps challenge, suggesting that they would contribute significantly to future explorations.
U.S. Chargé D’affaires to Bangladesh, Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson, expressed enthusiasm for Bangladesh’s participation, noting the Accords represent a commitment to international space diplomacy. She elaborated by stating, “These accords represent a form of leadership and multilateral affairs… we look very much forward towards working with you on this.” The ambassador also presented a gift to the Chief Advisor, featuring a patch worn by Joseph Acaba during his space mission.
Md. Ashraf Uddin, Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, emphasized the Accords’ purpose in offering guidelines for space activities. He noted that Bangladesh established the Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) in 1980 to foster space science and technology, affirming compliance with international norms concerning the peaceful use of outer space.
Following the signing, Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of BIDA and BEZA, remarked on the long-term implications of the agreement, predicting 15 to 20 years for a comprehensive understanding of its effects. He further indicated the development of opportunities for the youth, stating, “This will create a new avenue for the youth.” The event saw a collaborative effort from various ministries, facilitating the swift realization of the signing.
The signing of the Artemis Accords by Bangladesh marks a significant milestone in the nation’s space exploration endeavors.
