In a recent development, India has announced its intention to finalize a bilateral trade agreement with the United States by autumn 2025. This statement comes shortly before US President Donald Trump temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized India’s constructive engagement with the Trump administration regarding this trade pact.

The new baseline tariffs, set at 10 percent, officially commenced on April 5, while reciprocal tariffs of 27 percent started on April 9. While President Trump stated that world leaders are eager to secure deals with the US, he also increased tariffs to 125 percent on China.

When asked about Trump’s remarks, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal maintained that India is focused on the ongoing trade discussions. He highlighted that the Indian government is thoroughly evaluating the implications of the US announcements, considering feedback from exporters and industry representatives.

Negotiations for the trade deal were initiated following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with President Trump in Washington, DC, in February. Jaishankar noted that every nation is tailoring its strategy toward the US, with India’s goal centered on achieving a successful bilateral trade agreement. He underscored India’s unique position in reaching an understanding with the Trump administration, which aligns with this goal.
