China Urges United States to Cancel Reciprocal Tariffs and Restore Trade Balance
The Chinese Commerce Ministry has urged the U.S. to fully eliminate reciprocal tariffs imposed under Donald Trump’s presidency. In light of recent exemptions on electronics, they emphasize the need for correcting tariff mistakes. China has raised tariffs on U.S. imports and seeks to unite against perceived economic bullying while expressing confidence in overcoming trade challenges.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry has called upon the United States to “completely cancel” the reciprocal tariffs imposed during Donald Trump’s administration. This appeal comes in light of Trump’s recent exemption announcement for certain consumer electronics, including smartphones and laptops.
A spokesperson from the ministry stated, “We urge the US to take a big step to correct its mistakes, completely cancel the wrong practice of ‘reciprocal tariffs’ and return to the right path of mutual respect.” This statement indicates China’s desire to rectify tariff-related tensions between the two nations.
Additionally, the ministry emphasized the significance of the U.S. taking responsibility, remarking, “The bell on a tiger’s neck can only be untied by the person who tied it.” They expressed an ongoing evaluation of the exclusion of specific electronics, noting that most Chinese goods still incur a prohibitive 145 percent tariff due to a lack of a negotiated tariff pause.
In response to escalating tensions, China has recently raised tariffs on U.S. goods to between 84 percent and 125 percent, following U.S. duty increases on Chinese imports. The Chinese government is also rallying other nations to oppose what it perceives as U.S. unilateralism and economic coercion, seeking alternative trade partners.
China asserts its confidence in emerging victorious from the trade conflict, affirming, “If the US continues to play the tariff numbers game, China will ignore it.” The ministry emphasized a willingness to respond resolutely if U.S. actions continue to infringe upon China’s interests.
The Chinese government’s call for the cancellation of reciprocal tariffs reflects ongoing tensions with the United States amid trade disputes initiated by the Trump administration. Their appeals suggest a desire for mutual respect and cooperation in trade. As both nations engage in retaliatory measures, China’s determination to counter U.S. economic policies remains firm, indicating a protracted conflict unless diplomatic solutions are pursued.
