India’s Journey into the Elite Club of Defence and Space Technology

India has rapidly evolved into a global power in defence, space, and technology through government initiatives focused on self-reliance and innovation. Significant milestones include advancements in missile technology, successful missions from ISRO, and initiatives to compete in semiconductor and quantum technology markets. This positions India among the elite nations in these fields.

In recent years, India has transformed from a developing nation to a formidable global power excelling in defence, space, and technology. The government’s emphasis on self-reliance through initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India has been pivotal in positioning the country among the nations leading in advanced technologies.

India’s advancements in the defence sector are remarkable, marked by significant milestones. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has led initiatives that showcase India’s capability for modern warfare, particularly through the recent successful trials of a laser-based directed energy weapon system, placing India alongside the United States, Russia, and China.

Notably, India achieved a historic milestone in 2025 by testing an Active Cooled Scramjet for hypersonic missiles, utilizing indigenous endothermic scramjet fuel development. Additionally, the DRDO test-fired India’s first long-range hypersonic missile in November 2024, further solidifying India’s prowess in critical military technologies.

In 2024, India joined an exclusive group of nations with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, following the successful Agni-V test, which enhances nuclear strike capabilities. Earlier, in 2023, India conducted a sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile trial, reinforcing its naval ballistic missile defense capabilities.

Moreover, India achieved a successful flight test of an indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in 2023, showcasing advancements in autonomous stealth technology. The country also demonstrated anti-satellite (ASAT) capabilities with the Mission Shakti in 2019, affirming its ability to defend space assets.

India’s space ambitions, primarily led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), have gained global recognition. Recently, ISRO accomplished satellite docking and undocking technology through the SpaDEx mission and successfully soft-landed on the Moon’s South Pole, a historic achievement making India the fourth nation to do so.

In 2022, India established itself as the sixth nation with cryogenic engine manufacturing capabilities through the Integrated Cryogenic Engine Manufacturing Facility. The country previously set a world record in 2017 by launching over a hundred satellites in one mission, highlighting its innovative approach in space technology.

India’s technological ambitions are not limited to space. Through Semicon India, it is striving to become a semiconductor hub, attracting significant investments and partnerships in chip manufacturing. Additionally, the establishment of the National Mission for Quantum Technology and Applications positions India competitively in the quantum computing race, with substantial funding allocated to support advancement in this emerging field.

India’s remarkable advancements in defence and space, coupled with a strategic focus on self-reliance and technological innovation, underscore its emergence as a global power. The achievements in missile technology, ASAT capabilities, and space exploration position India among the elite nations in these critical domains. Furthermore, the country’s initiatives towards becoming a leader in semiconductor manufacturing and quantum technology reflect its intentions to compete at the highest levels in global technological advancements.
