The Tata Group-owned airline is currently undergoing a significant fleet upgrade and expansion, engaging in discussions with Boeing Co. regarding several planes that were prepared for delivery to China but were interrupted by newly imposed tariffs.
According to sources familiar with Air India’s plans, the airline aims to secure future production slots that have become available due to uncertainty regarding the acceptance of American aircraft by Chinese carriers. This strategic move signifies Air India’s intention to capitalize on the shifting dynamics in the aviation market due to geopolitical factors.
Historically, Air India has previously benefited from China’s reduced orders. As of March, the airline accepted 41 Boeing 737 Max jets that were initially intended for Chinese operators, following their deferral due to the model’s global grounding in 2019. The recent development is attributed to China’s reported directive to local airlines to cease accepting Boeing jets due to reciprocal tariffs of as much as 125% on US-produced goods.
At the time of the recent trade disruption, at least ten Boeing aircraft were reportedly prepared for delivery to Chinese companies, while some completed 737 Max units have already been returned to the United States. As of now, neither Boeing nor Air India has provided comments concerning the ongoing negotiations.
