China-Central Asia Forums Foster Cooperation and Cultural Exchange in Astana

ASTANA, June 23 — The China-Central Asia Cooperation Development Forum and the Third Silk Road International Communication Forum kicked off on Sunday in Kazakhstan’s capital. This event attracted around 240 representatives from various sectors, including media, think tanks, and cultural institutions from both China and Central Asia, who gathered to discuss the potential for strengthening Silk Road cooperation.

During the opening ceremony, Arman Kyrykbayev, an assistant to Kazakhstan’s president, conveyed a message from President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The president’s letter highlighted recent successful engagements, including the significant China-Central Asia Summit that took place not long ago, where the leaders of China and the five Central Asian nations came together.

President Tokayev remarked that both forums are critical for fostering dialogue and cultural ties between the two regions, expressing optimism that they would facilitate deeper collaborative efforts across various areas. He underscored the importance of continual exchanges between China and Central Asia.

In a keynote address, Fu Hua, president of Xinhua News Agency, emphasized President Xi Jinping’s unwavering commitment to enhancing cooperation between China and Central Asia. He noted that a stable and prosperous Central Asia greatly contributes to global stability. Fu called for closer media collaboration, advocating for joint research that aligns with the developmental needs of both regions to improve information sharing and generate impactful think tank reports.

Qiu Xiaoqi, vice president of the China Public Diplomacy Association, stressed the forum’s significance as a new chapter for collaboration among media, think tanks, and cultural institutions from six nations. He urged all participants to actively share narratives that convey the importance of China-Central Asia cooperation and the overall modernization of the Global South.

Further contributions came from Tursunali Kuziev of Uzbekistan’s Cultural Heritage Agency, who reiterated the value of close relationships, expressing enthusiasm for collaboration that inspires innovation and strong partnerships. He believes that this event serves as an effective platform for sharing ideas and fostering future endeavors.

Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan Han Chunlin highlighted the shared commitment among the six countries to foster good-neighborly relations. He appealed to the media to act as a bridge for fostering understanding and a supportive environment for the advancement of China-Central Asia relations.

Sun Weidong, secretary-general of the China-Central Asia Mechanism Secretariat, pointed out the significant role that think tanks and media play in solidifying a communal vision for the future. He assured attendees that the Secretariat is poised to support collaborative mechanisms across various sectors, aiming to strengthen ties among regional neighbors.

Meanwhile, Zu Bin from China Huadian Corporation Ltd. noted that as a significant global energy player, the company intends to uphold the Belt and Road Initiative. He highlighted the commitment to advancing mutual benefits and enhancing green cooperation within Central Asia.

The opening ceremony also marked the inauguration of a center dedicated to China-Central Asia regional cooperation and development. Co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency, the Kazakhstan President’s TV and Radio Complex, the Communist Party of China Shaanxi Provincial Committee, and the provincial government alongside China Huadian Corporation, the event showcased a newly released think tank report titled “Championing the China-Central Asia Spirit: Achievements, Opportunities and Prospects for Regional Cooperation,” available in Chinese, Russian, and English.
