The Thai military justified these measures by stating they were in line with the ongoing security situation at the border.
Relations between the two nations have deteriorated significantly, hitting a low not seen in over ten years. This downturn followed violent clashes in May that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier, prompting each country to retaliate with sanctions. Cambodia has since limited a variety of Thai imports, including agricultural products, electricity, and even popular television shows.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra explained that the travel restrictions are not only a response to ongoing tensions but are also part of a larger initiative to dismantle criminal scam operations associated with Cambodia. Moreover, she mentioned that internet access for Cambodian security agencies will also be suspended. No flights to Siem Reap from Thailand will be available for foreign tourists, mirroring similar actions taken against Myanmar previously due to cross-border cyber scams.
There may be some exemptions to these travel limits—for instance, medical patients or students could receive special permission at specific checkpoints. However, these exceptions will be determined by officials stationed at each border entry point, maintaining a strict control framework.
The situation has sparked significant political controversy in Bangkok, particularly following a leaked phone call conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. In the conversation, she referred to Hun Sen as “uncle” and suggested he disregard advice from a Thai military commander, whom she described as someone “just wanting to look cool.” Critics argue that such comments diminish the authority of Thailand’s military.
In the wake of this diplomatic debacle, one of the coalition partners supporting Paetongtarn’s administration has withdrawn from the government in frustration, leading to heightened internal political pressures. As for the border tensions, they echo a historical context dating back over a century, rooted in territorial demarcations set during the colonial era when France controlled Cambodia.
