China’s Xi to Skip BRICS Summit in Brazil

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the BRICS summit in July; Prime Minister Li Qiang will lead the delegation instead. Xi’s decision follows two recent meetings with Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Confirmation from Chinese officials is still pending, with the Foreign Ministry mentioning that further details will be provided later.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has officially decided to skip the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro, as noted by sources close to the situation. The Brazilian government has been informed that Prime Minister Li Qiang will head the Chinese delegation instead. This development marks a notable adjustment for the summit’s dynamics.

It appears that Xi’s absence is largely due to having already met with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva twice in the span of less than a year. Their first encounter was at the G20 summit in Brazil last November, followed by a meeting during the China-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States conference in Beijing last May.

While this information circulates among various news outlets, Chinese officials have yet to confirm the report. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, commented to the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, saying that “information related to participation in the summit will be provided in due course.” So, it seems we might have to wait a little longer for further details from Beijing regarding its BRICS engagement.
