Uganda’s Coffee Exports to China Experience Remarkable Growth

In August, Uganda’s coffee exports to China rose significantly, increasing fivefold from July, according to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority. Shipments climbed from 2,100 bags in July to 11,580 bags in August. This increase is attributed to stronger bilateral ties, effective marketing, and a growing appreciation for Uganda’s high-quality coffee beans among Chinese consumers, particularly the youth. Uganda is set to co-host a coffee expo in November with China, further promoting its coffee industry.

In a significant development for Uganda’s agricultural sector, coffee exports to China witnessed a remarkable surge, increasing fivefold in August compared to July, as indicated by the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA). The UCDA reported that shipments rose from 2,100 bags in July to an impressive 11,580 bags in August. The report underscores the growing recognition of Uganda’s superior coffee quality, highlighting an effective marketing strategy and the enhancement of product standards. Judith Nsababera, Uganda’s consul general in Guangzhou, emphasized the role of strong bilateral relations and a burgeoning market for coffee among the Chinese population, particularly the youth, who are developing a taste for the beverage. She asserted, “Our coffee has a superior taste. It is very versatile, meaning you can blend it with a low-grade coffee, and it will immediately improve the taste.” Looking ahead, Uganda, in collaboration with the city of Xiamen, is preparing to co-host a coffee expo in November, indicating further commitment to promoting Ugandan coffee in the Chinese market. The UCDA’s report additionally noted that China has now emerged as one of the top 20 destinations for Ugandan coffee. Overall, Uganda’s coffee exports generated $1.35 billion between September 2023 and August 2024.

Uganda has made substantial strides in its coffee export sector, particularly as it intensifies trade partnerships with countries like China. The recent report from the Uganda Coffee Development Authority highlights the importance of quality assurance in coffee production which is increasingly attracting international markets.
