Mr. Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, recently praised the People’s Republic of China for its significant contributions to the development of Uganda’s economy. During the visit of Mr. Zhong Shan, a member of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and Chairman of the Financial and Economic Committee, Mr. Tayebwa stated that the bilateral relations between Uganda and China span various sectors, including political, technical, trade, tourism, and health. He emphasized the importance of optimizing these relationships to enhance Uganda’s economic transformation. Mr. Tayebwa remarked, “Uganda and China enjoy strong, historical and excellent bilateral relations that have been upgraded to a comprehensive cooperative partnership. We should seek to optimise benefits from this mutual cooperation and partnership, including effective execution of projects that enhance Uganda’s economic transformation, development, and prosperity.” He also acknowledged China’s vital support amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, mentioning that China provided Uganda with 50,000 testing kits and 600,000 vaccine doses during a period when many nations restricted exports. Furthermore, he highlighted that China has granted Uganda substantial tariff concessions, allowing 98 tariff lines duty-free and quota-free market access, particularly for Ugandan beef, pepper, and fish products. Supporting Mr. Tayebwa’s sentiments, Mr. Henry Musasizi, the State Minister for Finance Planning and Economic Development, added that China’s economic growth positively influences Africa’s economic progress. He expressed gratitude for China’s ongoing assistance in infrastructure, energy, and human capital development, while also outlining Uganda’s ambitious growth plan targeting a GDP increase from $55 billion to $500 billion by 2039 through strategic focus areas. Mr. Shan further proposed that legislative bodies from both nations work to align their development strategies, fostering deeper exchanges in various fields including politics and culture to ensure a conducive legal framework for future collaborations.
The relationship between Uganda and China has evolved into a comprehensive partnership that encompasses a wide array of sectors crucial for economic growth. Historically, China has been a key partner for Uganda, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, trade relations, and technical assistance. This relationship gained particular prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic, as China provided significant humanitarian aid to Uganda, underlining the importance of international cooperation during global crises. This meeting highlights ongoing discussions concerning future projects and areas of collaboration, especially aimed at enhancing economic transformation in Uganda.
In conclusion, the meeting between Uganda and Chinese officials illustrates the robust and evolving partnership between the two nations, characterized by mutual support across various sectors.
