PV Sindhu Appoints Anup Sridhar as New Coach on Trial Basis
PV Sindhu has appointed Anup Sridhar as her new badminton coach on a trial basis, starting training in Hyderabad for the 2024 season. This change follows the end of her previous coach Agus Dwi Santoso’s contract after the Paris Olympics, where she notably did not win a medal. Sindhu aims to recover from injuries and prepare for upcoming competitions, especially targeting future events like the Asian Games.
PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, has appointed Anup Sridhar as her new badminton coach, confirmed earlier this week by her father, PV Ramana, a former Indian volleyball player. Anup Sridhar, recognized for his former role as coach to Paris 2024 semi-finalist Lakshya Sen, is currently engaged with Sindhu on a trial basis. Their training commenced in early September at the Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad, with plans to participate in the Arctic Open in the second week of October. PV Ramana stated to The Indian Express, “We are looking for a new coach with Agus’s contract ending. We are keen to see how a partnership with Anup Sridhar works out and are looking at four-five names going forward. Anup will travel to Finland and train her in Hyderabad.” Under Anup Sridhar’s guidance, Sindhu aims to navigate the remainder of the 2024 badminton season. Following her separation from Indonesian coach Agus Dwi Santoso after the recent closing of the Paris 2024 Olympics, Sindhu faced a challenging outcome in Paris, failing to secure a medal – a first in her Olympic career. At 29 years of age, Sindhu is acclaimed as India’s most successful badminton player, having earned a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as well as being the first Indian to achieve a gold medal at the World Championships in 2019, coupled with an impressive tally of two silvers and two bronzes. Despite her successes, Sindhu has contended with various injuries since winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham 2022. Currently, she is concentrating on her fitness and restoring her competitive edge. PV Ramana expressed optimism regarding her future, stating, “I believe she can continue for long, if there are no injuries. Sindhu has nothing left to prove, but she still thinks she can aim at the Asian Games.” Sindhu previously won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta; however, she did not clinch any medals at the Asian Games held in Hangzhou last year. The upcoming Asian Games in 2026 are scheduled to occur in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture.
PV Sindhu, as one of India’s most decorated badminton players, has undergone significant changes in her coaching team which reflects her aspirations for continued success in international competitions. After experiencing a disappointing outcome in the Paris 2024 Olympics, this coaching shift is critical as she prepares for the upcoming events, including the Asian Games. Her previous coach Agus Dwi Santoso’s contract ended after these Olympics, prompting Sindhu and her team to explore new directions. Anup Sridhar’s appointment is part of a strategic move as Sindhu aims to recover from injuries and enhance her performance.
PV Sindhu’s appointment of Anup Sridhar as her new coach on a trial basis marks a significant step in her career as she seeks to improve her performance following a medal-less Olympic outing. The shift in coaching aims to bolster her training and competitive readiness ahead of critical tournaments in 2024, particularly the Asian Games. As she continues to deal with injury setbacks, her focus remains on regaining her form and proving her mettle on the international badminton stage.
