Great Britain’s Team GB Records Lowest Medal Tally in 20 Years at Paris 2024 Olympics
The eagerly awaited Olympic 2024 medal table has been released, and the results have been determined. With only two events remaining in the Paris games, Team GB has put forth a commendable effort, securing a total of 65 medals, including 14 golds. However, this marks the nation’s lowest medal tally in 20 years.
Despite their best efforts, Team GB was unable to secure additional podium spots in the last two events. Neah Evans, who competed in the Women’s Omnium at the velodrome, fought hard but unfortunately fell short of a medal. As a result, Team GB concluded the games in seventh place in the standings.
The 14 gold medals secured by Team GB came from 11 different sports, with Rowing proving to be the most successful event for the nation. Notably, the Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls, the Women’s Quadruple Sculls, and the Men’s Eight event all contributed to the gold medal tally.
Equestrian was another standout sport for Team GB, with gold medals earned in both the Eventing Team and Jumping Team events.
The nation’s athletes showcased remarkable performances throughout the games, with memorable medal moments in various events. Keely Hodgkinson emerged victorious in the Women’s 800m, Alex Yee staged an incredible comeback to win gold in the Men’s Individual Triathlon, and Bryony Page captured hearts with her heroics in the Women’s Trampoline Gymnastics.
In addition to these achievements, the Women’s Team Sprint on the track and Thomas Pidcock’s impressive turnaround in the Men’s Cross-country Mountain Biking added to Team GB’s gold medal count.
Despite recording their lowest gold medal tally in 20 years, the 65 medals earned at the 2024 Olympics match the number achieved at the London 2012 games and even surpass the 64 medals earned in Tokyo.
Team USA emerged as the top team in Paris, securing a remarkable 40 gold medals and a total of 126 podium finishes. Their Women’s Basketball victory over France cemented their position at the top of the standings.
In comparison, China also secured 40 gold medals, but the U.S. claimed the top spot with a higher total medal count. Japan finished in third place, securing 20 gold medals and a total tally of 45.
The contributions of icons such as Tom Daley, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, and Adam Peaty also added to Team GB’s total medal tally, with each of them securing silver medals.
While the results may not have met expectations, Team GB’s athletes have undoubtedly made the nation proud with their extraordinary performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
