Simone Biles and Suni Lee Struggle in Balance Beam Final, Miss Out on Medals
The highly anticipated balance beam final of the 2024 Paris Olympics unfolded on Monday, presenting a challenging situation for renowned gymnasts Simone Biles and Suni Lee. For Biles, the competition resulted in a fifth-place finish, while Lee landed in sixth. In a surprising turn of events, Italy’s Alice D’Amato secured the gold, with her teammate Manila Esposito claiming the bronze. China’s Yaqin Zhou earned the silver medal, marking a significant achievement for the Italian and Chinese gymnasts.
Despite beginning her routine strongly, Lee encountered a stumble during a flip, resulting in a fall from the beam. Despite this setback, she demonstrated composure, completing her routine and achieving a score of 13.100. Biles, who performed seventh, faced a similar challenge. After an overly forceful landing from one of her flips, Biles lost balance and fell from the beam. Despite recovering and finishing her routine, she received a score of 13.100, placing her in fifth position.
Both Biles and Lee had aimed to surpass their previous Olympic performances on the beam. Biles had previously won bronze in the beam event at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Games, while Lee had finished fifth in the event in Tokyo.
Following the disappointing performance, Lee expressed her dismay to reporters, stating, “It definitely didn’t go how I wanted it to. I don’t even know what happened in my series. I thought it was straight on and then all of a sudden I was on the ground. I’m just really disappointed because I feel like I have so much more to prove on beam, and every single time I get to the final, I can just never do the routine that I want to do, but that’s just the mental side of it. So I just need to go and do the work and put all the effort in and maybe one day you’ll have it.”
She also mentioned feeling exhausted after nine days of intense competition, including winning a bronze in the uneven bars the day prior. Lee cited fatigue and the pressure of the event as factors contributing to her uncertainty about competing in the beam final. Despite these challenges, Lee remains determined to continue working hard and improving in future competitions.
Earlier in the Paris Games, Biles, Lee, and their team members achieved victory in the women’s team final. Biles secured the gold in the women’s all-around, while Lee claimed the bronze medal on August 1st. Biles further demonstrated her prowess by winning her third gold in the vault final two days later.
Biles consistently downplayed her achievements and medals, emphasizing her focus on enjoying what she loves, regardless of the statistics. She expressed, “I don’t keep count, I don’t keep stats. I just go out here and do what I’m supposed to and I’m doing what I love and enjoying it, so that’s really all that matters to me.”
As the Paris Olympics and Paralympics continue, the journey of these exceptional athletes remains a noteworthy narrative. The ongoing coverage of the games provides an opportunity to witness their remarkable performances and inspiring stories.
