Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee Impedes Drug Trafficking with Major Seizure of Afghan Hashish
ASTANA: The National Security Committee of Kazakhstan has reported the successful seizure of 50 kilograms of illegal drugs sourced from Afghanistan, valued at approximately $500,000 in the black market. This operation was conducted in collaboration with the intelligence services of Russia, highlighting a significant joint effort to curb drug trafficking in the region.
The announcement included details of the operation that took place in August, during which two individuals associated with an international drug trafficking organization were arrested at the Russian border while attempting to finalize a drug transaction. Investigations into these suspects are currently underway, as stated by the National Security Committee.
In light of this incident, it is pertinent to note the findings from a report published by Princeton University’s “World Politics” journal, which indicates a notable increase in the price of Afghan heroin in the United Kingdom. The cost of one kilogram has reportedly surged to $30,000, effectively doubling from prior valuations. This increase persists despite substantial quantities of opium being stored within Afghanistan.
The resurgence in drug trafficking poses a grave concern for various neighboring countries, especially since the Taliban’s rise to power has corresponded with the interception of numerous large drug shipments in multiple nations. The continuing flow of illicit drugs from Afghanistan remains a pressing issue that demands ongoing vigilance and international cooperation.
