Nicky Nieves and Steve Serio to Lead Team USA at Paris 2024 Paralympics Opening Ceremony
The United States Para Athletes Commission has officially announced the flag bearers for the American delegation at the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympics. Renowned athletes Nicky Nieves and Steve Serio have been chosen to represent the United States at the opening ceremony scheduled for August 28.
This year’s Paralympic Games pose a significant challenge for Team USA, which comprises 225 athletes. Historically, while the Olympic delegation has consistently excelled in the medals standings, the Paralympic team aims to achieve remarkable success, aspiring to surpass China—who has dominated the medal table annually.
Nicky Nieves and Steve Serio, the newly appointed flag bearers, will lead Team USA in this prestigious event. The opening ceremony will take place outdoors at the iconic Place de la Concorde, marking a historic occasion for the Games. Notably, this is the second consecutive time a duo has been selected to bear the flag for Team USA, following the precedent set in Tokyo.
Steve Serio, a cornerstone of the American team for nearly two decades, has been instrumental in securing three consecutive podium finishes, including two gold medal victories. As co-captain alongside his teammate Trevon Jenifer, Serio will provide vital leadership as his team competes at Arena Bercy. The 36-year-old athlete expressed his heartfelt gratitude and sense of honor upon receiving the distinction of flag bearer, stating, “I never thought I would experience this in my career. I hope my country will be proud of me and I cannot wait to represent you at the Opening Ceremony.”
Nicky Nieves, a trailblazer in sitting volleyball, played an integral role in the United States achieving its first Paralympic gold medal in this sport at the Rio Games in 2016. After missing the Tokyo 2020 Games due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nieves is eager to return and pursue a historic third consecutive gold medal alongside her teammates. In addition to her athletic prowess, she is a passionate advocate for mental health and disability awareness. Nieves founded the Limitless People organization, empowering individuals to engage in volleyball and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in mental health while serving as a representative for women’s sitting volleyball in national governing bodies.
Expressing her sentiments about being selected as flag bearer, Nieves stated, “Being the flag bearer for Team USA means that all my efforts have not been in vain. I can represent the country that made me who I am, with the best American athletes by my side. Thank you to my incredible team for nominating me for this honor.”
As the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games approach, the anticipation surrounding the American delegation continues to grow. With leaders like Nicky Nieves and Steve Serio at the forefront, Team USA is poised to strive for excellence on the global stage, united in their commitment to achieving greatness and inspiring others along the way.
