The U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is set to have its draw on Thursday in Cairo, Egypt, with 13 nations slated to compete from April 26 to May 18 in Côte d’Ivoire. The U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is preparing for the draw scheduled for Thursday at 1:25 p.m. Moroccan time in Cairo, Egypt. Viewers can watch the proceedings live on CAF TV, with draw assistants being former Mali international Adama Coulibaly and ex-Senegal star Souleymane Camara.
Taking place in Côte d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, the tournament will feature 13 nations competing for the championship. Teams will be distributed among three groups: Group A, consisting of five teams, and Groups B and C, each comprising four teams.
As host nation, Côte d’Ivoire heads Group A. Placement for the remaining teams will be determined based on standings from the last U20 AFCON. Nigeria, which placed third in the 2023 event, will take position B1. Defending champions Senegal will be assigned to C1. The identity of D1’s team remains unresolved due to the suspension of the Republic of Congo by FIFA.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, along with the two best third-placed teams. Côte d’Ivoire is set to host Morocco, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zambia.
Morocco had qualified for the 2023 U20 AFCON but withdrew prior to the tournament over travel arrangements for matches that were to occur in Algeria. Consequently, they missed the opportunity to compete for the title and the chance to qualify for the U20 World Cup.
The upcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire will see significant competition with 13 teams vying for victory, beginning with the draw scheduled for Thursday. The host nation Côte d’Ivoire leads Group A, while crucial placements for the remaining teams will be determined based on rankings from the last tournament. Morocco’s previous withdrawal from the last edition adds an interesting dynamic to the current tournament’s expectations.
