China has condemned the U.S. deployment of the Typhon missile system in the Philippines, warning that it will not tolerate threats from this action. The U.S. Army has maintained its Mid-Range Capability missile system, known as Typhon, in the Philippines since April 2024. This missile system can launch various missile types that serve land attack, air defense, and anti-ship purposes, with a striking range of up to 1,000 miles.

Although the Typhon was initially meant for military exercises, the U.S. and the Philippines have opted for its indefinite retention. During a recent press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun criticized the Philippines for not shipping out the Typhon after drills, labeling it both “ridiculous and extremely dangerous”. He responded to Philippine Defense Chief Gilberto Teodoro’s revelation that Manila plans to procure the Typhon to bolster its defense capabilities.

In an interview with The Japan Times, Secretary Teodoro confirmed that enhancing the Philippines’ capabilities is a priority, asserting that these developments are crucial for maintaining the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Guo Jiakun further insisted that the Philippines should reconsider its strategic decisions and stop on a path that could be detrimental to its national interests, accusing the Typhon deployment of potentially escalating regional tensions within the geopolitical landscape.

The deployment of the Typhon missile system has intensified already existing tensions between the Philippines and China. In January, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged China to halt its aggressive moves in the South China Sea in exchange for the Typhon’s withdrawal from the Philippines.
