Trump Proposes Saudi Arabia as Venue for Talks with Putin on Ukraine

President Trump suggested Saudi Arabia as a potential meeting place with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine. Highlighting ties with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump expressed confidence in the choice. Saudi Arabia’s role as a mediator may bolster its global influence while addressing regional conflicts, including Yemen.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump indicated a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin focused on resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine. He suggested Saudi Arabia as a prospective venue for this significant encounter. Trump stated, “We expect that he’ll come here, and I’ll go there and we’re going to meet also probably in Saudi Arabia the first time.”

Highlighting the relationship between both leaders and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump expressed confidence in the choice of Saudi Arabia as the host for their initial discussion since he assumed the presidency anew. He remarked, “We know the crown prince, and I think it’d be a very good place to be.”

Saudi Arabia has increasingly positioned itself as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, aided by its connections with both nations and its neighbor, the United Arab Emirates. For Crown Prince Mohammed, mediating this war is an opportunity to augment his global leadership stature and demonstrate influence beyond the Middle East, despite ongoing challenges related to the conflict in Yemen.

The Crown Prince has previously engaged in diplomatic efforts, including facilitating the release of ten prisoners from various countries as part of a broader exchange between Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, in May 2023, he invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address Arab leaders in Jeddah, where Zelensky urged Middle Eastern nations to support Ukraine in its struggle against Russia.

President Trump’s indication of potential talks with Putin in Saudi Arabia underscores the kingdom’s evolving role as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The connection between Trump, Putin, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman hinges on diplomatic relationships that may strengthen international discussions aimed at resolving the protracted war. Saudi Arabia’s increasing diplomatic activity reflects its ambition to enhance its global stature while navigating challenges in the region.
