The Second Army Area has lodged a formal protest with the Cambodian Army regarding a provocative incident that occurred at Prasat Ta Muen Thom in Surin. On February 13, Cambodian soldiers reportedly crossed the border, sang their national anthem, and challenged Thai troops. Subsequent discussions via the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) have contributed to de-escalating the situation.
During this incident, Thai troops attempted to prevent the Cambodian unit from singing their national anthem, which led to a verbal confrontation. The leader of the Cambodian soldiers claimed they would not permit Thai forces to occupy the site, daring them to engage in conflict. Fortunately, the Cambodian unit ultimately withdrew without any violence.
Prasat Ta Muen Thom is an ancient Khmer temple that Thailand considers its territory, despite the border not being officially delineated. Lt-Gen Boonsin Padklang of the Second Army Area reiterated that Thailand has taken a lenient stance, permitting Cambodian visitors to access the temple under the condition that they refrain from any actions implying territorial claims.
In addition, Lt-Gen Boonsin highlighted that the Thai forces intervened during the Cambodian unit’s anthem to prevent potential recording of footage that could later be presented as evidence for territorial disputes. After discussions with Cambodian counterparts through the RBC, tensions have subsided, signifying improved communication between the two nations.
The Second Army Area’s protest to the Cambodian Army highlights ongoing border tensions, stemming from an incident at Prasat Ta Muen Thom where Cambodian troops crossed into Thai territory. The proactive talks through the RBC demonstrate a commitment to resolving disputes amicably. Ensuring clear communication and maintaining respect for territorial integrity remains crucial for both nations moving forward.
