Celebration of the Paralympic Torch Relay in France as It Begins Tour for Paris 2024 Paralympics
The inaugural Paralympic Torch Relay for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games commenced with great enthusiasm on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the preparations for the upcoming event. The torch made its momentous entry into France precisely at noon, having traversed the Channel Tunnel from Great Britain, where it originated. This event was celebrated as the torch multiplied into twelve distinct flames, each destined to illuminate diverse regions across France.
On this remarkable day, the torch relay began its journey following the lighting ceremony held in Stoke Mandeville, England, recognized as the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. Hélène Raynsford and Gregor Ewan, torchbearers who lit the flame the previous day, passed the torch to Andrew Small, the captain of the British relay team, who notably secured a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Accompanying him were distinguished para-athletes, Ian Rose and Ian Marsden, as they navigated the underwater journey through the Channel Tunnel, escorted by a guard of honor comprising 24 British torchbearers.
Awaiting their British colleagues halfway through the channel were 24 esteemed French torchbearers, including Laura Mills—great-granddaughter of Sir Ludwig Guttmann—and Ludivine Munos, an accomplished para-swimmer with a multitude of accolades. At the symbolic Mid Point, the French relay’s captain, Emmanuelle Assmann, ceremoniously retrieved the torch from its exquisite Louis Vuitton case, engaging in a torch kiss that epitomized the camaraderie between the two nations.
As the torch emerged at Calais, the flame divided into twelve separate torches, signifying the start of a nationwide celebration in anticipation of the Paralympic Games. The relay’s initial route included the bustling city of Pas-de-Calais, as well as other significant locations, each harboring vibrant celebrations. Notable stops included Valenciennes, Rouen, Antibes Juan-les-Pins, Montpellier, and Lourdes—among many others—where local festivities were organized by the French Paralympic Committee and local authorities, further energizing the spirit of the Games.
Adding a unique twist, a thirteenth torch participated in commemorative events for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris, held at Place Denfert-Rochereau. This segment involved torchbearers from five towns celebrated as Companions of the Liberation. The day crescendoed with a vibrant event at Rock en Seine festival, where the torch was showcased alongside prominent French cultural figures and musicians, further intertwining sport and cultural celebration.
The inaugural day of the torch relay celebrated the essence of inclusivity and athleticism, featuring over 360 dedicated torchbearers, with many distinguished sports figures representing various para-sport disciplines showcasing remarkable feats. Renowned para-athletes, including multiple medalists in swimming and para-table tennis, illuminated the paths throughout the journey, inspiring communities as the excitement of the Paralympic Games began to permeate the French populace. Moving forward, tomorrow’s itinerary promises further exhilarating events as the torch continues its journey through fourteen additional towns and cities, inviting an even wider audience to witness and participate in the splendor of the Paralympic Games.
