China Coast Guard Attributes Collision Responsibility to Philippines in South China Sea Incident
On November 4, 2022, the China Coast Guard (CCG) attributed the responsibility for a recent collision in the South China Sea between a CCG vessel and a Philippine fishing vessel to the Philippines. According to Gan Yu, a spokesperson for the CCG, the Philippine vessel 3002 unlawfully entered the waters near Xianbin Jiao within China’s Nansha Qundao without the requisite approval from the Chinese authorities.
At approximately 14:12 hours, Gan reported that the Philippine vessel failed to heed repeated warnings issued by the Chinese Coast Guard and deliberately collided with the CCG vessel 21551, which was engaged in standard law enforcement activities at the time. This act, characterized by the CCG as unprofessional and dangerous, resulted in a significant maritime incident.
The spokesperson declared, “The responsibility lies entirely with the Philippine side,” urging them to refrain from infringing upon China’s maritime rights or further instigating provocations. Gan emphasized that should these actions persist, the Philippines would be held accountable for all ensuing consequences. This statement reflects ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, a region marked by complex territorial disputes.
