Cote d’Ivoire Affirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan in Western Sahara
Cote d’Ivoire strongly supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, emphasizing its legality and potential for peace. During a UN meeting, Tiemoko Moriko acknowledged the initiative’s provisions for Sahrawi autonomy and praised Morocco’s human rights efforts. He called for renewed roundtable talks, urged compliance with the ceasefire, and expressed concerns about human rights in Tindouf camps, reinforcing an international consensus around Morocco’s proposed framework for resolution.
Cote d’Ivoire has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan concerning Western Sahara, emphasizing its conformity with international law and Morocco’s dedication to achieving a peaceful resolution. Tiemoko Moriko, the Ivorian representative to the United Nations, expressed this commitment during a recent UN Committee of 24 meeting, highlighting the plan’s provision for significant autonomy for the Sahrawi population, which he described as a “credible, relevant, and unique” approach to the issue.
Moriko’s endorsement further solidifies the extensive support for Morocco’s proposal, now backed by over 107 UN member states. He acknowledged Morocco’s considerable investments in the region, which have empowered local communities and positively influenced the Human Development Index. Furthermore, Moriko praised the progress made in human rights within Western Sahara, particularly the enhancements in human rights commissions.
During his address, Moriko urged for the revival of roundtable discussions among Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the Polisario Front. He called for the continuation of these talks in their previous format, asserting that it is essential for all parties to engage with “realism, a spirit of compromise, and good faith” to reach a sustainable resolution, as recommended by the UN Security Council.
Additionally, Moriko endorsed the inclusion of democratically elected representatives from Western Sahara in future Committee of 24 discussions. He stressed the necessity for all stakeholders to uphold the ceasefire and collaborate with the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINURSO). Moreover, he indicated concerns regarding the human rights conditions in the Polisario-administered Tindouf refugee camps and called for a population census in accordance with UNHCR recommendations.
Cote d’Ivoire’s statement adds to the increasing international endorsement for Morocco’s autonomy plan, positioning it as a feasible framework for achieving a long-lasting and realistic solution to the ongoing conflict in the Sahara region.
