Duplantis and Ingebrigtsen Set New World Records at Silesia Diamond League

Armand Duplantis and Jakob Ingebrigtsen Achieve Historic World Records in Silesia

On August 25, during the Silesia Diamond League at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, two exceptional athletes, Armand Duplantis and Jakob Ingebrigtsen, made significant marks in the annals of athletics by breaking longstanding world records.

Armand Duplantis, the reigning Olympic champion in pole vault, astounded spectators at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland, by clearing a height of 6.26 meters on his second attempt, thus setting a new world record. Prior to this, the 24-year-old Swede had impressively broken the world record at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, achieving a height of 6.25 meters. His latest accomplishment, which marks the tenth world record of his illustrious career, showcased his phenomenal skills and consistency. Following his jump, Duplantis expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I knew I felt really good. The weather was absolutely perfect for jumping high. There was no wind at all, it was warm, and a great course, so everything depended on me.”

The pole vault event featured tough competition, with notable performances from athletes such as Sam Kendricks and Emmanouil Karalis, both of whom cleared 6.00 meters. Kendricks ultimately struggled with three attempts at 6.08 meters before Duplantis succeeded in his quest for the world record.

Additionally, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the accomplished long-distance runner from Norway, made his mark by shattering the world record in the men’s 3,000-meter race. Ingebrigtsen’s remarkable time of 7:17.55 eclipsed the previous record of 7:20.67 held by Kenya’s Daniel Komen since 1996, by a substantial margin of over three seconds. Ingebrigtsen expressed his delight post-race, stating, “It was an incredible feeling. Of course, I wanted to attack the record, but based on training, I could not predict the exact time. I never imagined running 7:17.55.” Ultimately, Ethiopian athletes Berihu Aregawi and Yomif Kejelcha secured silver and bronze, respectively, with times of 7:21.28 and 7:28.44.

The competition also exhibited remarkable performances in various other events. Letsile Tebogo from Botswana won the men’s 200 meters in 19.83 seconds, while Canada’s Marco Arop triumphed in the 800 meters with a time of 1:41.86. Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy took home the gold in the men’s high jump, clearing 2.31 meters.

In the women’s events, Jamaica’s Tia Clayton claimed victory in the 100 meters with a time of 10.83 seconds, while Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic won the women’s 400 meters, clocking in at 48.66 seconds. Her fellow competitors, Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser and Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek, finished with commendable times of 49.23 seconds and 49.95 seconds, respectively.

In conclusion, the Silesia Diamond League was an outstanding display of athletic prowess and determination, culminating in two record-breaking performances that will undoubtedly be remembered in sport history.
