On March 4, 2025, China’s Commerce Ministry announced its intention to retaliate against new U.S. tariffs set to take effect that same day. The Ministry emphasized that the Trump administration is attempting to assign blame and intimidate China regarding the flow of fentanyl. The proposed tariffs will introduce an additional 10% duty, culminating in a total of 20% in response to alleged Chinese inaction concerning drug trafficking.
The United States has accused China of supplying chemicals necessary for fentanyl production, a claim that China refutes.
