Zimbabwe Projects 21% Increase in Tobacco Sales for 2025
Zimbabwe is expecting a 21% rise in tobacco sales for 2025, recovering from a drought-affected 2024. The agriculture minister announced a projection of 280 million kilograms, although this remains below the 2023 record of nearly 296 million kilograms. Last year, tobacco ranked as the second-largest export, generating $1.3 billion.
Zimbabwe anticipates a notable 21% increase in tobacco sales for 2025, as articulated by Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka. This rebound is expected following the adverse effects of last year’s drought, which severely impacted production levels. The nation, recognized as Africa’s leading tobacco producer, forecasts sales to reach approximately 280 million kilograms this year, a considerable rise from the 230.9 million kilograms recorded in 2024 due to the El Nino phenomenon.
In the previous year, despite diminished production, tobacco emerged as Zimbabwe’s second most significant export, trailing only behind gold, generating an impressive income of $1.3 billion. The distribution of tobacco occurs through auction floors and contracted companies, with the majority of exports directed towards China. It is important to note that projected 2025 figures still fall short of the record high of 296 million kilograms achieved in 2023, as per the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board’s report.
