Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India engaged in a telephone conversation with President Joe Biden of the United States on Monday, focusing on significant regional and global matters, notably the situations in Ukraine and Bangladesh. During this call, Prime Minister Modi briefed President Biden about his recent visit to Ukraine on August 23, emphasizing India’s unwavering support for restoring peace and stability in the region.

This dialogue marked the first exchange between the two leaders since President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the U.S. presidential race, favoring Vice President Kamala Harris, and it was also Prime Minister Modi’s initial discussion with a world leader following his extensive visit to Kyiv, where he advocated for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

Regarding Ukraine, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance favoring dialogue and diplomacy, underscoring the need for an early return to peace and stability. Both leaders exhibited their mutual concern over the current situation in Bangladesh, stressing the importance of restoring law and order and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, particularly the Hindu community.

The Indian government has recently communicated with Bangladesh’s interim administration regarding reports of violence against Hindus and other minorities following the significant political shift on August 5, when the Sheikh Hasina regime fell. The Bangladeshi officials have countered these claims, asserting their commitment to uphold the rights of all citizens and describing media reports from India about attacks on minorities as exaggerated.

Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for President Biden’s steadfast commitment to strengthening the India-U.S. comprehensive global strategic partnership, which is grounded in shared values such as democracy, the rule of law, and robust interpersonal connections. Both leaders reviewed the progress in bilateral relations, affirming that the India-U.S. partnership is designed to benefit both nations and contribute positively to global betterment.

In addition, President Biden and Prime Minister Modi pledged to enhance cooperation within multilateral forums, including the Quad, and agreed to maintain open lines of communication moving forward. Looking ahead, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit the United States in September to participate in the United Nations General Assembly and the forthcoming Summit of the Future, as hosted by the United Nations.
