External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the Kashmir issue and India’s progress in solving it at a session in London. He highlighted measures such as the abrogation of Article 370, economic restoration, and conducting high-turnout elections. Jaishankar also spoke on international economic matters, the multipolarity trend led by the U.S. under Trump, and the dynamics of BRICS nations regarding the dollar.

On Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Kashmir issue, highlighting steps taken by the Indian government to resolve the matter in the valley. Speaking during a session at Chatham House in London, he emphasized the abrogation of Article 370, the resurgence of economic growth, and the holding of elections with substantial voter turnout as pivotal actions.

Jaishankar stated, “In Kashmir, we have done a good job solving most of it. I think removing Article 370 was one step. Then, restoring growth, economic activity and social justice in Kashmir was step number two. Holding elections, which were done with a very high turnout, was step number three.” He added that what remains is the reclamation of the part of Kashmir currently under illegal Pakistani occupation, asserting, “When that’s done, I assure you, Kashmir solved.”

In addition to discussing Kashmir, Jaishankar touched upon India’s relationship with China, the internationalization of the Rupee, and the role of the dollar in the global economy. He noted, “I don’t think there’s any policy on our part to replace the dollar… what we want in the world is more economic stability, not less.”

Jaishankar also remarked on the differing views within the BRICS nations concerning the dollar’s dominance, highlighting the need for economic stability and a multipolar currency landscape. He indicated that the assumption of a united BRICS opposition to the dollar is inaccurate, stating, “To me it’s kind of deterministic that there is multipolarity, multipolarity has to translate itself into a currency multipolarity.”

On the subject of international relations, Jaishankar praised the U.S. administration under President Donald Trump for aligning with India’s interests in promoting multipolarity along with the necessity of a bilateral trade agreement between the two nations. He observed that the Quad alliance of the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan reflects a collective that proceeds equitably without allowing for free riders, emphasizing its effectiveness as a strategic model.
