According to the research firm IDC, smartphone shipments in India totaled 11.1 million in January 2025, reflecting a 9.7 percent decrease compared to January 2024. This decline in smartphone demand was preceded by a downturn that began in the final quarter of 2024. Despite this, the overall smartphone market experienced a modest growth of 4 percent last year, indicating a complex market landscape. Moreover, IDC’s report noted Apple’s remarkable growth, achieving an increase of 11.7 percent in the same month.

Though Apple’s market share remains smaller compared to Android manufacturers, consumer preference is shifting, making India one of Apple’s favored markets, second only to China. Furthermore, Apple has successfully positioned itself among the top five smartphone brands in India during the last quarter of the previous year.

In line with Prime Minister Modi’s Make in India initiative, several smartphone manufacturers have prioritized local production. Notably, all models of the latest iPhone 16 series will now be manufactured in India, destined for both local markets and exports. While Android brands, with the exception of Oppo, have reported negative growth, Oppo has noted a modest increase of 5.3 percent in sales for January 2025.

Apple has recently launched the iPhone 16e in India, which has replaced the iPhone SE 4, with a competitive starting price of Rs 59,900. As the company seeks to expand its reach in the market, it has introduced attractive bank promotions for this new model, which is anticipated to significantly boost its demand in the competitive smartphone environment.
