Puntland Security Forces Intercept Kamikaze Drones Bound for Al-Shabaab
Garowe, Somalia (Horn Observer) – In a notable development concerning regional security, Puntland State authorities have successfully apprehended seven individuals suspected of having ties to either Al-Shabaab or ISIS, along with an illicit shipment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This operation was facilitated by actionable intelligence regarding the transportation of weaponry into the area.
A high-ranking official from Puntland’s security forces, who requested anonymity, affirmed that among the seized UAVs were five Kamikaze drones believed to have originated from Yemen. The interception of this consignment occurred early Monday morning on a truck that was traversing the route between Galkayo and Garowe, the administrative capital of Puntland. Reports from Kaab TV indicated that the drones were likely smuggled into Puntland through Bosaso, the region’s principal port city located along the Red Sea coast. This incident follows a recent uptick in counter-terrorism measures undertaken by security forces in Bosaso, reflecting heightened vigilance against potential threats.
According to the security source, “The seven suspects and the drones concealed within the truck were apprehended en route to Galkayo.” Subsequent investigations by law enforcement officials have confirmed the discovery of the five drones, which are now secured under the custody of Puntland’s security apparatus. While officials have not elaborated on the ongoing investigation, there is a prevailing belief that the shipments were intended to bolster the capabilities of Al-Shabaab, a terror organization actively seeking advanced weaponry, including suicide drones.
Kamikaze drones, recognized for their ability to evade radar detection and execute precision strikes, represent an emerging threat within contemporary combat scenarios. Such drones have been increasingly employed by various military actors globally, including state and non-state entities alike. Notably, in late July, Bosaso security officials disclosed the seizure of a substantial cache of illegal weaponry during an enforcement operation, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by authorities in maintaining security across the region, particularly concerning smuggling routes extending from Yemen.
