Zimbabwe Awaits BRICS Membership Decision Following Talks in Moscow
Zimbabwe’s Foreign Minister Amon Murwira visited Moscow to discuss bilateral relations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. They emphasized trade and economic cooperation, including scholarships for Zimbabwean students. Murwira confirmed Zimbabwe’s ongoing application to join BRICS and awaits a decision, marking his first official visit to Moscow in this role.
The Honorable Amon Murwira, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, recently visited Moscow to engage in discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During their meeting, Lavrov highlighted the strong foundation of equality and mutual respect underlining the relations between Zimbabwe and Russia, with an emphasis on advancing trade and economic cooperation across various sectors including geological exploration and energy.
Minister Lavrov also noted that Russia provides 125 scholarships annually for Zimbabwean students to study in Russian institutions and expressed willingness to increase this number. He announced that the next Russia-Africa summit is scheduled for 2026, following a ministerial conference in 2025 aimed at enhancing the Russia-Africa Partnership.
Foreign Minister Murwira reaffirmed the positive political relationship between Zimbabwe and Russia while indicating a desire for deeper economic ties. He addressed inquiries regarding Zimbabwe’s application to join BRICS, recognizing the organization as a vital platform for economic collaboration. Murwira stated, “Zimbabwe is currently working on fulfilling the requirements necessary to join BRICS. We are at the application stage and are awaiting a response in line with the consensus reached within the BRICS framework.”
This visit to Moscow marks Minister Murwira’s inaugural trip to Russia in his capacity as Foreign Minister, further solidifying diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
