Zimbabwean Students Embark on Mechatronics Study Program in China

Thirty-two students from Zimbabwe are set to study mechatronics engineering in China as part of a joint training initiative between Harare and Ningbo Polytechnics. The program aims to bolster international educational collaboration and skill development, enhancing Zimbabwe’s workforce. Previous cohorts have successfully transitioned into employment, proving the initiative’s significance for national industrialization.

On March 6, 2025, a ceremonial send-off was held for thirty-two Zimbabwean students from Harare Polytechnic, who will study mechatronics engineering in China. This initiative is part of a joint training program between Harare Polytechnic and Ningbo Polytechnic, located in Zhejiang Province. The students have already completed their first year in Zimbabwe and will continue their education in China for an additional eighteen months.

During the event, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Simelisizwe Sibanda, underscored the importance of this collaboration, stating it marks a significant advancement in international education ties. Sidbanda emphasized the historical partnership between Zimbabwe and China, which has evolved to enhance cooperation in various sectors, particularly education.

The program has previously seen success, with fifty-eight students having participated in a fully funded initiative that provides dual certification upon completion. Sibanda noted that thirty students who went to China in 2023 have successfully concluded their studies and secured job placements, showcasing the program’s effectiveness in addressing skill shortages in Zimbabwe.

Beneficiary Panashe Mudondo expressed gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging that the program will equip students with essential skills for national development. Mudondo articulated a commitment to utilizing the skills gained to support Zimbabwe’s industrialization and modernization efforts, stating, “We are thankful for our government’s vision and commitment to investing in our education and development.”

The joint training program between Harare Polytechnic and Ningbo Polytechnic serves as a critical bridge for Zimbabwean students to gain invaluable skills in mechatronics engineering. This initiative not only enhances educational collaboration between Zimbabwe and China but also contributes positively to local job markets and the nation’s industrial objectives.
