Egypt has achieved record potato exports to Greece, importing over 156,000 tons valued at USD 64 million in the marketing year 2023/24. This is a substantial increase from previous seasons, with Egypt’s market share reaching 65%. Greece has also increased its domestic consumption and export activities.

Egypt has solidified its status as Greece’s primary potato supplier, achieving record exports in the marketing year 2023/24. According to EastFruit, over 156,000 tons of ware potatoes were imported by Greece from Egypt, valued at USD 64 million, representing a 12% increase from the previous season and a remarkable 71% increase compared to the 2021/22 season.

As the second-largest market for Egyptian potato exports, following Russia, Greece typically receives shipments during the second half of the marketing year. This timing aligns with the period of limited local potato stocks, with peak exports occurring from February to April.

Since 2002, Egypt has led in potato exports to Greece, leveraging efficient logistics and competitive pricing. In the current marketing year, Egyptian potatoes accounted for approximately 65% of Greece’s total potato imports, significantly outpacing France’s 12.8% and Cyprus’s 9.1%. Overall, 18 countries supplied potatoes to Greece during this period.

The increase in imports from Egypt can be attributed to a rise in domestic potato consumption in Greece, which reached 301,000 tons in 2022, a 12% increase over the prior year. Additionally, Greece has been actively exporting potatoes, reaching nearly 80,000 tons in the 2023/24 season, with major destinations including Romania, Bulgaria, and Poland.

Egypt ranks among the top five global potato exporters, while Greece is noted as the 14th largest importer of potatoes worldwide in 2023.

In conclusion, Egypt has set a historical precedent in its potato exports to Greece, significantly increasing its market share. This growth is fueled by improved logistics and competitive pricing, establishing Egypt’s dominance in the sector. Greece’s increasing domestic consumption and its role as both an importer and exporter marks an important development in the regional potato trade.
